Mount Etna (or Aetna) is an active volcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy situated in the Metropolitan town of Catania, between the cities of Messina and Catania. It is the tallest active volcano in the entire European region at 3,329 meters high. It’s one of the most active volcanoes in the world, as constant activity could be monitored in its vicinity all the time. It is never dormant for a long time.

In ancient Greek Mythology, the deadly monster Typhon was trapped underneath this mountain by Zeus. Due to the active state of the volcano, the surrounding areas and nearby cities have a very fertile soil which is good for planting crops like wheat, barley, rice. Vineyards and orchards spread through the hills and valleys from Catania all the way to the south.

Mount Etna has been designated by the United Nations as a Decade Volcano. Most recently in 2013, it has also been added to the World Heritage Sites of UNESCO. Despite the obvious dangers the volcano poses, residents are finding it hard to stay away because of the fertile lands around Mount Etna.

According to ancient history the name Etna came from the Phoenician word “attuna” meaning furnace or chimney. This is probably due to the constant presence of hot molten lava flowing around the base of the volcano.

Now, despite this violent history and tendency of Mount Etna, it is a wonder that people still visit the place to see for themselves such a magnificent spectacle. With the sheer size and height of the volcano, one cannot help but be amazed how such a volatile mountain could support a sustainable community around it. Every year, hundreds of thousand of tourist come to view the volcano and marvel at its beauty.

When I went to visit Mount Etna with a group of eager tourist, the weather was nice and the skies were clear. This gave us a crisp picture of what the volcano looks like from a distance. Tall, majestic, temperamental. It’s definitely a breath-taking view to behold. People are oblivious to the fact that in can go off at any given moment, without a single warning.

People who love adventure will definitely appreciate the raw beauty of this place. It is no wonder that this place continues to attract tourists from all over the world. They love the adventure of discovering new places and things, plus a moment of living on the edge gives them the thrill and the rush of excitement.
